Source analysis

Alejandra gave an excellent presentation yesterday. Draw your attention to how she answered “What can we learn from this source?” and “What does this source tell us about its author/the place it talks about/etc?” in a very comprehensive manner. At the same time, she gave us details from the source showing that she had read it thoroughly and to support her argument (the five points).

Possible guiding questions for a source like this one:

  1. What was the Beagle? Why did the British send explorers to South America? Are there any other examples?
  2. How does Central Chile fit in Darwin’s voyage? Is there a comparative approach to other stages of his journey?
  3. Think of the references Darwin makes: Lord Cochrane, Chimborazo, etc. Why are these references important? What do they tell us about the audience of this publication?
